The impact of COVID-19 on Italian zootechnic systems

The economic scenarios expected as a consequence of the current crisis related to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the containment measures taken have been already widely analyzed by the institutions in charge, which outline a situation of strong reduction in the GDP at least for the next two years.If the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the macro-sector of animal production can be assessed on the basis of information coming from the market channels of the organized large-scale distribution, however it should be taken into consideration that an important share of the sector is articulated in small local realities. In this regard, the numerous PDO and PGI productions, sometimes based on a few producers and processors, with diversified market channels and not always traceable, can be mentioned. The Italian Academy of Georgofili and ASPA have elaborated a document on "The impact of the coronavirus emergency on Italian livestock systems", with the aim of identifying the main critical issues affecting companies in this complex phase, thus outlining the technical itineraries towards which the relevant ministries and regions should direct efforts to ensure the full access, or the removal of any impediments, including the need to promote innovation transfer actions.
